Every Motorcycle Has a Purpose

People ask me why I ride.

Sometimes they're thinking about buying their first motorcycle.

Sometimes they think I'm completely crazy.

And sometimes they just don't understand why anyone would willingly ride something with two wheels, no roof, and no air conditioning in the middle of a Texas summer.

The funny thing is, after more than 25 years of riding, my answer has changed.

When I bought my very first motorcycle, it wasn't some romantic story about finding myself on the open road.

It was freedom.

It was cheap gas.

It was the ability to lane split! something that isn't legal everywhere in the U.S., but where I lived at the time it made commuting possible.

Honestly, it wasn't just a hobby.

It was my transportation.

Rain or shine, if I needed to get somewhere, I was riding.

Back then, I wasn't chasing mountain passes or planning cross-country adventures. I was simply trying to get to work, meet friends, and enjoy the independence that only a motorcycle could give me.

Looking back, I didn't realize it then, but that first bike started something that would become a lifelong passion.

Today, I don't ride because I have to.

I ride because I need to.

There's a big difference.

Motorcycles have become my escape, my reset button, and sometimes even my therapist. They force me to slow down, stay focused, and be present. When you're riding, nothing else really matters except the next corner, the next stop for fuel, or whether those clouds ahead are about to ruin your day.

And that's when I realized something.

Every motorcycle has a purpose.

Not just mechanically.

Personally.

I've owned adventure bikes, sport bikes, touring bikes, cruisers, dual sports, and probably a few too many motorcycles over the years. Looking back, I don't remember them because of horsepower numbers or spec sheets.

I remember them because of what they taught me.

Some motorcycles arrive exactly when you need them.

Not because they're the perfect bike.

Because they're the perfect bike for that chapter of your life.

The KTM 990 Adventure

Sometimes You Need to Get Lost

The KTM 990 Adventure completely changed the way I travel.

Before I owned it, I looked at dirt roads and wondered where they went.

After I bought it, I stopped wondering.

Adventure riding isn't about getting somewhere.

It's about discovering places you never planned to visit.

That bike took me across the Colorado BDR (Backcountry Discovery Route www.ridebdr.com), starting at Four Corners and working my way north through Colorado to the Wyoming border.

Some of the best riding I've ever done.

Mountain passes.

Old mining roads.

Tiny towns.

River crossings.

Weather that changed every hour.

There were moments where I questioned my route.

There were moments where I questioned my sanity.

And there were moments where I'd shut the bike off at the top of a pass and simply enjoy the silence.

The KTM taught me that getting lost isn't failure.

Sometimes it's exactly the point.

(And yes... the COBDR deserves its own story.)

The BMW K1600B

Sometimes the Best Road Is the Long One

The KTM taught me adventure.

The K1600B taught me distance.

That six-cylinder engine is almost impossible to describe unless you've ridden one.

It's smooth.

Ridiculously smooth.

You stop thinking about the motorcycle and simply enjoy the ride.

I'd leave home planning to ride for a few hours.

Then I'd notice a road I've never been on before.

Why not?

Next thing I knew I was a hundred miles farther from home than I planned.

The K1600B taught me that not everything has to be rushed.

Sometimes taking the long way home is exactly what you needed.

The BMW R1100S Boxer Cup Replica

Slow Is Smooth

The Boxer Cup Replica might be my favorite motorcycle BMW has ever built.

Not because it was the fastest.

Because it had personality.

You couldn't fight that motorcycle.

You had to ride with it.

Smooth inputs.

Smooth braking.

Smooth throttle.

The better you rode, the better it rewarded you.

That bike taught me something I still carry today.

You don't have to force everything.

Whether it's riding, work, or life...

Smooth usually wins.

The Harley-Davidson Street Bob

Sometimes You Ride for No Reason at All

The Street Bob reminded me of something I'd forgotten.

You don't always need an adventure.

You don't always need to cross a state.

Sometimes you just need an excuse to disappear for a couple of hours.

No GPS.

No destination.

Just ride.

I'd stop at coffee shops.

Talk to strangers.

Find little Texas roads I'd never noticed before.

Watch the sunset.

Head home.

Some of those short rides did more for my mental health than an entire vacation.

The Street Bob taught me that motorcycles don't always have to take you somewhere.

Sometimes they simply bring you back to yourself.

So Why We Really Ride

People think motorcycles are about speed.

Some think they're about freedom.

Others think they're about adventure.

The truth is...

They're all right.

Sometimes we ride because we need to clear our heads.

Sometimes we ride because we're searching for a road we've never seen before.

Sometimes we ride because we miss a motorcycle we sold years ago.

And sometimes...

We ride because life gets loud, and motorcycles have a way of making everything quiet again.

Looking back, I don't think my favorite motorcycles were really about the motorcycles at all.

They were about awho I was when I owned them.

Every one of them taught me something.

Every one of them represented a different chapter of my life.

And if I've learned anything after all these years, it's this:

The best motorcycle you'll ever own isn't necessarily the fastest, the newest, or the most expensive.

It's the one that shows up exactly when you need it.
